Quick Rack suitable for Right Hand Drive (RHD) TR4-6. This Steering Rack reduces the number of steering wheel turns from lock to lock. A standard TR4-6 steering arrangement requires 6" (152mm) of steering rack travel to achieve full lock to lock movement. With a standard steering rack fitted, this equates to 3.25 turns. This steering rack will require 2.5 turns to achieve 152mm of linear movement.

These racks are made for RevingtonTR only to our specification and are identical in form to our part numbers for standard TR4late to TR6 rack and are therefore an easy fit. please see below notes regarding fitting to early TR4's with vertically mounted racks. 

 

Checking bump steer is a worthwhile job to undertake when fitting a steering rack to ensure the car runs straight and true but should only be undertaken by a competent mechanic who understands the principle.

 
When replacing your old rack, consider replacing your worn out mountings with polyurethane, part no. SPF0941K (TR4late to TR6 only) or aluminium block type RTR3007K which work with all types of rack TR4-6.

 

Initial inspection and fitting

Please do be aware that the steering will seem stiff to start with, this should not be a surprise as the steering rack is brand new and will certainly appear stiff compared with the previous steering system which is likely to have covered many tens of thousands of miles and is being replaced because the old system was worn out and probably sloppy. Customer experience tells us that the steering will ease up after 100 miles or so and that when two to three hundred miles have been covered the  rack will seem to have bedded in nicely.


Each user will have a different opinion about what is acceptable in terms force required to turn the steering wheel, however before deciding something needs to be done about the steering rack, it is important to ensure the swivel components in the suspension are not causing the problem. We have created a Technical Instruction which shows how the steering rack can be adjusted to reduce the torque required to turn the pinion. This should, after adequate running in, never be necessary but is offered should a user feel it is something they wish to do. Notes regarding fitting to early TR4's with vertically mounted racks.

The early TR4 rack is unique in that it is mounted vertically. As the instances of this type of rack are few, the quick rack is made to replace the later TR4 style rack which mounts horizontally, a mounting style that was carried through to the TR6. This means that whilst the quick rack is a direct fit to TR4late to TR6, slight modification is needed to fit the rack to early TR4's insomuch as the location flange will need to be altered slightly to get correct orientation. The original rack being removed can be used as a guide. The track rod threaded end varies in length from version to version, but this should be able to be taken care of in adjustment of the track rod end.
