TR4-4A engine bay steering shaft.This steering shaft assembly takes the place of the original steering shaft assembly from the upper column to the steering rack on TR4-4A. This product is proving to be a best seller and is now supplied with pinch bolts, nuts and Washers. A separate shaft is available for TR250, 5 and TR6. See below.

This replacement assembly consists of a universal joint (UJ) at both ends and a solid shaft in-between.

Originally the TR4-4A had a shaft with rubber couplings at either end with 4 splined adaptors to allow the coupling to be attached to the upper column, inter-shaft and the steering rack. The TR250, 5 and 6 used one rubber joint and a UJ. The rubber joint introduces vagueness to the steering and it has become common practice to use the TR4 inter-shaft with a spline at either end to couple two UJ s to the upper column and the steering rack. Unfortunately all the hard parts in this system have become difficult to find and the rubber parts are not of particularly high quality.
In response to this RevingtonTR have developed this steering shaft as a complete assembly, using all new parts that does away with all the components identified above.
There is no increase in NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) and the steering is sharpened up due to the lack of rubber in the system. We realise that Triumph's engineers used rubber joints for a reason, that being to insulate the steering wheel from road vibration. Triumphs engineers thought two were necessary on the TR4 and 4A but realised with improving road surfaces around the world, only one was necessary on TR250, 5 and 6. With roads having improved still further, there is no need for any rubber in the steering shaft unless the car is used in the harshest of conditions. These shafts have been selling well since 2016, during that time we have had no customers comments of unwanted NVH. 
Our replacement steering shaft with two universal joints does away with the complex and soggy lower steering shaft fitted to TR4-6. TR4-4A have two rubber joints that make for soggy steering as well as clamps at both ends that can when worn, be incapable of tightening onto the steering rack pinion at the lower end and likewise the upper end. The TR250, 5 and 6 were slightly improved only having one rubber joint but until the very late TR6 still had poor clamps.
This New shaft does away with all these issues as it is a one piece shaft (the TR4 is made up of 7 different pieces plus bolts, washer and nuts!) consisting of two universal joints welded to a solid shaft.

 

Two 5/16"UNF bolts, nuts and washers are needed to clamp the new shaft to the upper column and the rack pinion. These parts are included with the shaft in this kit.

  

Fitting information: - 

TR4/4A and TR5/6 shafts are slightly different length and also over the years with replacement joints having been fitted to the original shaft, there may be slight variation in shaft length. Our new shafts measure: - TR4-4A 705mm, TR250, 5 and TR6 765mm between the centre line of the pinch bolts. It would be good practice to measure the shaft coming out for comparison. it may be necessary to adjust the length of the upper column slightly to fit our new shaft. It is the INNER part of the upper column that might need adjusting and this can be achieved by slackening the clamp assembly connecting the two parts of the inner column together. In some extreme cases the OUTER column may not allow the inner column to go back far enough. In this case the outer column can be moved back by slackening the clamps under the dashboard and moving the column back sufficiently. Please see you specific workshop manuals to complete these operations correctly.
