TR2-3 Left Hand Drive Dual Master Cylinder kit (wiper motor on RH side, Lockheed axle and drum brakes), with Clear Plastic Reservoirs. This kit will give you the security of knowing that if one part of the braking system fails the second part will still be active.

Two brake master cylinders are used side by side in a carrier similar to a standard TR4 carrier but able to accommodate 3 cylinders (two for the brakes and one for the clutch). All parts needed to complete the conversion are included in the kit: two clear plastic reservoirs mounted on the side of the master cylinder support bracket, all pipes, cylinders for brakes and clutch, balance bars and push rods. Please see the 'Kit contents' tab for a complete list.

When fitting this kit to a TR2-3B minor bulkhead alterations are needed to widen out the pocket aperture and a larger pocket RTR7180 and back plate RTR7181 are required, sold as a kit RTR7180K. In addition the pedal assembly needs to be exchanged for one with the top operating levers modified to TR4-4A specification. The pedal assembly is not part of this kit. Revington TR can exchange your pedals if required. Order part number RTR4168LEX. The offset spacing of the TR4 pedals' top levers is required so that the pedals line up with the cylinders. The TR2-3B pedals are not spaced far enough apart and would require the cylinders to be impractically close together. Even with TR4 spaced pedals in use the cylinder flanges are very close and in some cases need relieving to fit them. This is an acceptable situation, fully explained in the fitting instructions. If you are not sure if you already have TR4-4A pedals available, then checking the spacing between the levers that operate the master cylinder push rods will help.
1. TR2-3 Lockheed. Centre to centre between push rod levers = 27mm. The push rod levers are flat.
2. TR3-3B Girling. Centre to centre between push rod levers = 41mm. The push rod levers are joggled out 7mm and have round tops.
3. TR4-4A Girling. Centre to centre between push rod levers = 50mm. The push rod levers are joggled out 11mm and have flat tops with round corners.

It should be noted that the 12.7mm (0.50") diameter brake master cylinders supplied in this kit will usually result in brake pedal pressure feeling a little softer than a single standard cylinder, however this can vary to some degree from car to car depending on the other Braking system components in use. For instance if a 4 pot calliper kit is used the size of the pistons in the callipers will affect pedal pressure.
To special order we can build our duel circuit braking system with 15.875mm (0.625") diameter cylinders which will make the pedal pressure feel quite a bit firmer than the standard arrangement. This size is preferred when a duel circuit servo is fitted as the servo overcomes the extra foot pressure required.

Neil Revington says: - I have used these kits on my TR2 and on the TR4 rally car with 15.875mm (0.625") diameter cylinders and no servo since the middle 1990's and they are very effective BUT you do have to press hard. The smaller cylinders do give a better feel.

For those wishing reduce the pedal pressure we offer a dual servo kit which applies equal assistance to both the front and rear brakes. We recommend 15.875mm (0.625") diameter cylinders be incorporated in our duel circuit kit when a dual servo is used. Please ensure these are asked for when ordering. Our dual Servo kit is part number RTR4118-3LK. We also offer the servo on its own for those wishing to arrange their own installation.

You may wish to take the opportunity whilst fitting this kit of moving away from a hydraulic brake light switch to one that is directly operated by the brake pedal below the pivot. We have a bracket to achieve this, listed below with a suitable switch.

Background

The Triumph TRS raced at Le Mans with a system of dual circuit brakes, which was also installed on the Conrero and other prototypes by Triumph. This system, which has now been reproduced by Revington TR, is in use on Ex-Works TR4 rally cars 3VC and 6VC and is therefore well proven. Whilst initially offered for the TR4-4A, can now be supplied for TR2-3B and TR derivatives as well.

Dual circuit brakes, with one cylinder for the front and one for the back, continue the reputation Revington TR components have for Improving performance and safety.

Technical Description

It should be noted that the brake master cylinders supplied in this kit are 12.7mm (0.50") diameter which when two are uses in a dual circuit system have a combined surface area of 254mm² (0.393 inch²). This is slightly less than the surface area of the 19.05mm (0.75") diameter original cylinder (of which of course there is only one)
at 284mm (0.442 inch²) used on Girling systems fitted to TR3-4A. The result of this is that the pedal pressure will feel slightly softer than a single standard cylinder, however if braking system has been modified and the current pedal pressure is harder than standard then this new arrangement will improve matters.
This assumes the surface area of the calliper cylinders and rear wheel cylinders is standard. Larger pistons diameter at the wheels will make the brake pedal feel soft if this is the case already then to special order we can build our duel circuit braking system with 15.875mm (0.625") diameter cylinders having a combined surface area of 396mm² (0.614 inch²) which will normalise the situation. We recommend using these cylinders if a duel circuit servo is to be used.
The TR2 Lockheed master cylinder is slightly larger than the TR3-4A Girling system at 22.22mm (0.875") giving a surface area of 388mm² which is almost identical to two12.7mm (0.50") diameter cylinders meaning that these will be ideal for a TR2-3 still using drum brakes.

Kits for Other Models

We have kits for all TR's from TR2-4A which differ for a variety of reasons from the need to make simple bulkhead alterations (TR2-3B) to nothing more than brake pipe alterations (TR4A).
