270mm unit shown for reference

DIP sender unit for fuel gauge. Choose the correct length, this one is 300mm long. The advantage of this type of sender unit that the float is not subject to fuel surge and the tank can be foam filled.

Our range of VDO tube type fuel senders are the most robust fuel sender in our product range. A tube type sender uses the least amount of space within a tank, with no worries about float arm direction. The float is contained within the aluminium cylindrical housing, and it rides on two resistive wires that protect it from the 'extreme fuel sloshing' that occurs in many shallow, large or odd sized tanks.

Available in 34 standard lengths in 10mm increments from 150mm (6 in) to 800mm (31 ½ in), VDO tube type fuel senders feature a standard SAE 5-hole mounting flange and are suitable for petrol and diesel fuels. The aluminium flange and housing can withstand extreme environments, where dust or salt water spray are present. A neoprene mounting gasket and 0.250" spade connections are provided with each sender.

TR2-6 tanks do vary in the depth available for the sender unit but as a rule around 275mm is usual for a TR2-3B and around 260mm-270mm (Triumph altered the shape of the bottom the tank to suit larger tyres in the spare wheel well as the years progressed) is usually the longest that can be accommodated in a TR4-6 tank. Obviously the longest that will fit gives the best low fuel reading.
The 5 hole fixing, standard on this type of modern sender unit will not fit the TR tank which has a 6 hole fixing. An adaptor ring RTR8547-1K will be required which attaches to the tank with 6 screws, then allows the sender to be attached to the ring with its 5 screws into tapped holes in the adaptor ring.

This type of sender will NOT work with a standard TR fuel gauge as the internal workings are quite different. We do however produce a complete range of compatible gauges to suit TR2-6 which look identical to original gauges when fitted to the car. See below to choose the correct gauge for your installation.

SOME NOTES TO HELP WITH CHOOSING AND INSTALLING THE CORRECT SENDER UNIT.

  1. 4mm of clearance is needed between the bottom of the sender unit and the bottom of the tank. Drain the tank before working for safety reasons.
  2. To find out what length sender to use, measure from the sender mounting face on the top of the tank to the bottom of the tank. This might be 275mm say. Add to this the thickness of the adaptor ring (8mm), the VDO gasket (2mm compressed) and the cork standard gasket below the adaptor ring (1mm compressed). The total is 286mm therefore a 280mm sender unit can be used.
  3. Remember to choose a special gauge from the list below as Dip senders will not work with the original gauge.
  4. With the adaptor ring and extra gasket the Dip sender unit stands up 10mm more than an original sender unit. Ensure there is plenty of room to accommodate this slight extra height.
  5. TR2-3A (pre TS60,000) petrol tanks have a stepped bottom. The mounting hole for the sender unit is above the raised part, there will therefore always be some reserve fuel (about 10 litres) when the gauge shows empty. The same applied to post TS60,000 cars but the residual will be less.
  6. Use Heldite sealant to ensure a leak free installation. see below
  7. We keep sender units from 250 to 300mm long. All other sizes are supplied to special order.
  8. We recommend creating a calibration chart. When filling the tank after fitting the sender unit do so from a suitable receptacle recording 5 litre increments against the gauge reading. Disconnect the coil whilst the ignition is on for this prolonged operation.
